Dunkeld, the Sma Glen and Aberfeldy form a golden triangle round the ancient hamlet of Trochry, whose ruined castle was owned by the Earl of Gowrie until the 16th century. Much of the stone was looted to build present day structures, which might account for the huge foundation stones of the Meikle Trochry Mills!
Last century the Kings of Spain rented the adjacent Drumour Mansion regularly for shooting and fishing. Less than a mile away is Rumbling Bridge, where the spectacular waterfalls attract present day visitors, and has been painted for posterity by Sir John Everett Millais, who based himself at Rumbling Bridge Cottage, while Beatrix Potter's love of nature and storytelling was inspired by decades of childhood holidays in the area.
This is truly excellent walking country, bird watching from the balconies, buzzards, red kites, ospreys and sea eagles soar overhead. Deer, red squirrels, pine martins and even a rare wild cat has been spotted within a few metres of the Mills.
Bonnie Prince Charlie, poet William Wordsworth and Scotland’s earliest 18th century tourists traversed local early roads.
